Link Analysis Time Saver: The Social Firm’s Link Analysis Template

Backlink analysis is a crucial part of the job in SEO/SEM. Whether it’s your site, a client’s, or a competitor’s, being able to quickly analyze the backlinks of a website and take away valuable information is something that would save us all valuable time. Enter The Social Firm’s Link Analysis Template. At The Social Firm, we put this Excel template together to allow someone to drop in exported data from SeoMoz’s Open Site Explorer and it would output relevant, valuable data that allows for both a quick, high level analysis, as well as being able to dig deep in the list of links for the little gold ingots we are all looking for.

The Social Firm Link Analysis Template

Summary Report

There is a Read Me on the first tab explaining how to use the template in extreme detail, although most should be able to just plug and chug. There is a Summary page that shows the top ten linking domains with the count of how many links come from that domain as well as the max domain authority from that site. It also shows the top ten anchor text used and a count of each. Finally, there is a graph showing the link profile broken down by page authority. The area where you drop in the OSE data is actually a table so, unlike in OSE, you can fully filter through the data. It also breaks down every linking root domain with a count and max DA, as well as every anchor text and a count, in the Root Domain and Anchor Text tabs respectively.

This template is extremely simple and easy to use but I find it a convenient way to quickly get a view of what a site’s link profile looks like as well as provides a printable summary that would be easy to show to your boss or a client. I know in my short experience in SEO the Internet has been a great resource. Everyone and anyone in the industry is constantly blogging and posting about what they are doing and how it is working. I hope that this template is something that people in the industry find useful in the way that I have in doing link analysis. It’s not super in depth, but definitely gives a great high level, quick, view of a link profile as well as allowing filtering of the raw link data from OSE. Enjoy!

Golf in January? Might as well – The 2013 Chilly Willy Open

The third weekend in January is definitely not the ideal time for most people around here (Ohio) to play golf. It is, however, my favorite weekend of golf in the whole year. For the past 15 years, this weekend has held The Chilly Willy Open, on a roughly created par 3 hole cut into the woods behind my house outside of Creston, where I grew up. It is the pet project of my step-dad Joe “Willy” Butler and over the past 15 years has really turned into an extraordinarily well run event and, more importantly, always has been a great time for all involved. Joe Willy, as his close friends have called him for years referring back to famous NY Jets QB Joe Willy Namath, deserves so much recognition for this yearly event. He puts in so much time, effort, and money to organize it every year. I mean he goes out half way through the week and tarps off the green to keep it in prime condition. Thanks Joe, from everyone that has ever participated, you deserve it.

The Butler Cabin

The Butler Cabin

The tournament started in 1999. I was nine years old the first year. I don’t really remember what the thought process was for coming up with the idea, but once the ball got rolling (pun intended) it was on from there. I remember we used extension cords to circle in the green and 3-point area. I guess this would be a good time to explain how the tournament works before we go any further. As it is today, the hole cut into the woods is approximately 100-110 yards from the furthest hitting position. Because it has regular lawn grass and no real green the tournament is not played like traditional golf. There are three mats, hitting positions, what have you, three different places where you hit from. The closest is about 30 yards, the second at 60-70, and the third is around 100-110. Each golfer gets three balls from each mat. The front of the green is marked by a line of spray paint and a small lattice fence around the back. If you make it on the green from any mat, you get one point. There is a smaller area marked circling the pin within the green, worth three points. Finally, a hole in one, if you make the shot in the cup you get six points and your signed ball goes on the wall in the Butler Cabin (our little shed where the score is kept and the event is ran from). The number of rounds and cuts depends on the number of people there and time, but the running joke is that if you tie with Willy at least in the first round, you are definitely making it through because Joe isn’t going to eliminate himself if he doesn’t have to.

Along with the hole-in-one signed balls, plenty of Ohio State memorabilia and miscellaneous tools; a picture of Joe and each of the past 14 winners adorn the walls of the Butler Cabin, playing on the name of the famous cabin where the winner of The Masters (one of the most prestigious golf tournaments of the year held at Augusta National in Augusta, GA) is awarded the Green Jacket. For the Chilly Willy, we have the Scarlett Jacket that the winner wears in their picture with Joe. It was an old beige sport coat that I still remember dying red (the only time it was dyed) in a bucket the first year. From 1999 until this year you can see the progression of fading of the jacket throughout the pictures. A group of the guys’ wives come every year and do nothing but register everyone for the tournament and keep score. There is also a group of people that come and are down by the green for the tournament, radioing the scores into the ladies in the cabin as they come, and taking measurements for closest to the pin. We even have a small fire pit down by the green that really only gets used during the tournament. It is all pretty impressive when you step back and think about it.

I started by working the tournament when I was younger, too young to play. I can’t remember what year I first started playing but I would bet it was early high school. I wasn’t into golf as much as everyone else in the family. My step-brother and sister both played in high school, as did my younger brother. Joe, Ryan, and Adam play in so many different leagues and tournaments each year. Just about all of the guys that come are good friends of my step-dad and/or have played golf with or against one of the three of them at some point. It’s a real big group of golfers, friends, and HUGE Buckeyes fans; something I can only hope to have with my friends many years down the road.

On top of all of this, my Mom makes a ridiculous amount of chili. People all come with different food, pizza, dip, cheese plate etc. We get the garage heated up as a relief from the cold weather. When you’re not golfing (read: eliminated early because the golf skills of yours truly are lacking a bit) chances are you’ll be in the garage eating some chili, maybe playing some cards with the others that are out of the tournament already.

From L: Duddy, J-Wall, Cub, Jake, and Ben

This year I managed to get a few friends to come up with me. Dustin was the smartest of all of us and just came for the food and drink (read: beer) and saved his entry money, unlike Jake, J-Wall, and I who didn’t get much for our payment. Ben managed to make it a few rounds which was definitely fun to watch, especially cause these guys had no idea what they were in for. This year we had a great turnout. As my roommate Jake pointed out, who was also out in the first round like me, we came all this way to hit 9 shots (which with the $18 entry fee works out to paying $2 per shot). He was kidding though, we all had a blast. The weather was definitely warmer than usual which depending on how you look at it is good or bad. There’s been plenty of years with snow on the ground.

This year reminded me how much I love the Chilly Willy. Looking back over the past fifteen years it’s the cause of so many great memories. I was extremely happy to see my buddy Ben and both my step-brother Ryan and brother Adam all advance pretty far, as well as the rest of my friends having a good time. Ryan, who has finished second in the tournament too many times to count finally got off the schnide and pulled out a victory this year and my brother Adam took a tie for third. I couldn’t be happier for them, except well maybe if I would have taken away the money instead of donating. Either way, I can’t wait for next year and I know I’m not the only one.

PLEASE Tell me Rudy is still real…I can’t imagine

This whole Manti Te’o girlfriend thing is absolutely crazy. I had no idea about the supposed story (that until today, I guess, wasn’t so supposed) about him losing his girlfriend to leukemia and using it to inspire him and his team on their incredible season leading up to a complete no show in the championship game, getting waxed by Alabama. In my recent memory never before has there been a news story like this. Not in sports. Not in politics. Not anything. Something that for so long was a source of awe and inspiration, a story thrown around the media like the high school cafeteria. Each story with its only little bit of unique, that when lumped all together shows the true colors. It’s like one of those posters that you have to stare at real close for a few minutes and then back a way to see the whole picture. But in today’s day and age, how was it possible for the public to be stuck staring and not put it all together? It all begins and ends with the media.

Today’s sensationalist media, which feeds on inspiration and awe, was chomping at the bit. Te’o was perfect. The next Tebow-like figure that the media requires year in and year out. The all american guy, a star football player on a highly ranked team with a great attitude, family, a great “story.” Once on the teat they couldn’t stop. Every different type of news organization coming out with stories about his girlfriend, her death, his inspiration. It was beautiful. So beautiful, in fact, that all these media outlets forgot to do what they were founded to do to begin with, actual journalism.

I’m sure all of you have read the Deadspin article now that outlines, in full detail, the entire hoax. If you havent, immediately stop reading this and do so. You wont be disappointed, and will most likely finish with your hands on your head in disbelief going, “holy sh*t, how was this possible?” It was possible because the same news organizations writing all of these stories about her tragic death involving both a car accident and then a treacherous battle with leukemia failed to read each others’ material. The Deadspin article points out that between the stories ran on major outlets there were four different dates of her death. There are an incredible amount of different quotes, tweets, stories of her visiting his family in Hawaii, conversations between her and Manti etc. None corroborating any others, no witnesses, nothing, but all taken for gospel.

Somewhere, some famous person in investigative journalism from back in the day when reporters had beats, and you know, did actual reporting is rolling over in his grave. It didnt take Irwin Fletcher to solve this one. All it really should have taken someone is a Nexis search after her death. None of the news outlets wanted coverage of the funeral, comment from the relatives? I find that hard to believe, which I have found myself saying time and time again with the story. If someone would have simply looked, one would have found that there is no record of the death. Which then would have sparked numerous questions as the avalanche begins and the whole thing falls apart. But no one did, until now. Or maybe check with Stanford, where as Deadspin points out you would have found no record of her as a student or past student.

Journalism is an interest of mine. I love sports and think that sports journalist have one of the most incredible jobs in the world. They pay their dues but they get rewarded in a way very few do. My step-mom was a reporter, classically trained to do real reporting, actual work to find and break a story. I am not claiming that I know more than others or am some sort of expert on the art of journalism but. I absolutely know that hindsight is ALWAYS 20/20. That being said, HOW COULD THIS HAVE HAPPENED? This man was able to not only trick the media, which as it appears all you need is a good story and some creativity on social media, but a lot of the American public. It took Deadspin, an internet media company. A company that, I’m sure, many of the major news outlets frown upon and want people to think is not up to the standards of the big guys, and should most certainly not be trusted. They did the fact checking, they did real reporting and ended up finding the rabbit hole and are taking it as far as it goes.

This whole story is an indictment of the media today. It challenges the integrity of most major news outlets. I mean CBS did a special the day of the national title game about Te’o and his now-known-to-be-non-existent girlfriend. ESPN was all over it. How could no one have uncovered this? How is there not a single person that really wondered beyond what was being told? How was there not some 23 year old college bro sitting on the couch with his buddies looking up on Google “Manti Te’o girlfriend?” I’ve been there (BTW, atta boy Johnny Football…his girl is gorgeous). I guess so far the only possible explanation could be that EVERYONE was in on it. One big hoax on America’s people. Apparently in South Bend, April Fools Day is January 16th. I’m much looking forward to the jokes about this, because I don’t think its inappropriate anymore if the girl who died of cancer didn’t actually die of cancer, or more importantly didn’t exist at all. And all of this at a University dedicated to Catholicism with a huge statue of Jesus right close to the football stadium. I am by no means perfect, or anywhere near so I’m not going to judge Te’o or the Tuess-whatever-his-name-is who supposedly set this whole thing up until a lot more is learned, and I have a feeling that, “like the Bordeaux grape, this [story] will get extremely better with time.”

UPDATED UPDATE: Here are some tweets found by Justin Megahan, using services like Topsy that have a direct fire hose from Twitter, that shows friends of the scam architect joking about the whole thing months ago.

Here they are joking about other people running Lennay’s Twitter.

Here they are talking about ND needing some divine intervention in the title game.

This one is calling out Ronnie T as being the one running the profile.

My First Real Post: GAME ON Meditations in an Emergency!

20130114-055242.jpg

Up all night. It isn’t the first time and definitely won’t be the last. I got on a roll finishing this site out and before I knew it its 5:30 in the am. Oops. Still rocking my OSU jersey from watching my boys hand that team up north their first loss of the season, leaving no undefeated teams in college basketball. I want to welcome everyone to my page. I encourage you to check out my About Me and About This Site sections, as well as my resume, school, and work (which I will have to muscle through on little sleep later on today).

This blog is called Meditations in an Emergency. It is from an episode of Mad Men. It is a collection of poems by Frank O’Hara. I haven’t read the book, but I love the part it plays in Draper’s life in that episode. I feel like the title is also very indicative of my intentions of this site. In a world swirling from all directions with stress and worry that is common across all people, I hope to use this blog as my meditations. In this transitional period of my life, it sure seems like an emergency. An emergency that I figure out plans for after graduation. Stresses from school, work, and life in general aren’t things that I alone suffer from. It is just a part of life. So in this life, seemingly an “emergency”, I hope that this site helps me keep constant in my thoughts and habits. I hope that others read, relate, and learn (if possible) from my experiences and thoughts. I will be writing about anything and everything. I will review things and places I like. I will write about industry topics in my work. I will write about music, sports, business, really anything that peaks my interest. I understand that the possibilities are endless and that regardless if people read them or not I will benefit from writing in many ways. Your feedback will be greatly appreciated. Tell me what is good, what is bad, what to keep doing, and more importantly what never to do again. I am very good at taking criticism understanding that it is the only way I will know what to improve on. Check out the left side of the page for links to all of my social media profiles and my e-mail. I hope to hear from all of you.

BTW: It’s 5:49 am…. AND MICHIGAN STILL SUCKS!

I am not really sure where this site is going to end up going but I do know that I plan on using it in some fashion to document my thoughts, musings, funny stuff, sports etc as well as provide a portal for friends, family, potential employers and others to see about my life. So keep checking back people, there’ll be more soon!
